Wisconsin Artists Biennial 2007

Juror’s statement

I was delighted to learn that there had been a record number of submissions for the 2007 Wisconsin Artists Biennial, and even more so when I saw the quality of the work during the initial jurying process. As is customary for juried exhibitions of the scope of the Wisconsin Artists Biennial, the process began by reviewing slides and digital images of the work. Information about the dimensions and media of every submission were also provided. From past experience as a juror, I have found that this procedure works quite well, but as is the case with all jurors, I am always eager and curious to see the work after it has been installed. The 2007 Biennial exceeded my already high expectations.

Selecting the awards was difficult because there were so many strong pieces to choose from in the exhibition. The top awards reflect the diversity of styles and materials in this year’s show. First place went to abstract artist Leslie Vansen for “Passage”. Its shifting layers, ribbon-like strands, and variations in surface texture combine to create a dynamic painting. Second place went to David Holmes for “Unicorn Cadaver”, a whimsical sculpture made from found materials. Peggy Flora Zalucha’s realistic watercolor, “Saitama Reflections”, received third place. These works, along with all the works in the 2007 Biennial at the Haggerty Museum of Art, reflect the rich talent to be found among Wisconsin artists.
